The kids group went real well, everyone worked together very well and the kids, ages 12,11,11,11,11 and 8, really got into it and were asking for more when time ran out. This weekend we will continue and maybe on day during the break we can all get together.

Well things did go over a bit differently than I expected...the group wants to play Dungeons and Dragons but NOT 4th edition. So using the resources from the Beginner Box I put together five characters. I used the core rules but did use the adventure and pawns for the game....we had a Half-Elf Druid, Elf Ranger, Halfling Rogue, Human Fighter and a Human Bard. We had time for one combat encounter and it went GREAT! The two new players caught on very quickly and they want more now next week for sure. The Druid is very interested in finding out what Black Fang is...
This weekend I am running for my sons friends and I might have to modify the setting to use it with their group. We are coming off a seven month hiatus from Pathfinder and they are second to third level...this should be fun!
Side note Tim is Liam coming? I know I am leaving you messages everywhere but I have not heard from ya!
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Well I was asked about this game from one of the kids at school in the club...and after I was done with my five minute description she was hooked! I asked if she was sure and she is so now she is convincing the other's so now I wait and see what they want....
I've played this at cons only twice....once savaged the other the classic rules and I am looking forward to doing something with this system. I have to agree with Tim about the magic system BUT it's not horrible in my mind and it is simple. I am finally beginning to wrap my head again around the rules and I have run a couple of single player combats and I can see the fun in this game, like the tagline from the game goes, FAST, FURIOUS and FUN!
I will need to make some characters for both systems and be ready to run ASAP...should be interesting!

The kids in the AGC have requested a fantasy game...now I could go in a few different directions but I think I will run a one-off using this system from Jason Vey. IT is a nice simple system that doesn't require a ton of dice and with the lower complexity it is something that encourages you to role play. I am going to download the "quick start" rules and get a copy to each of the players and then using pre-gens that I will make we can get started.
I will keep you posted on this one!

I had the pleasure over the weekend to do a lot of reading in this new RPG, and I really am impressed with it. I normally don't like dice pool mechanics but this one works for me as it worked in Victoriana as well, the Heresy Engine. I'm not sure on the set world that they are writing, it is based on Abney Park music, but I do like the inspiration and could see using it for a few different ideas.
I am still working on putting together a better sheet for it and making a few sample characters...I will post more once I am done with that.

The high school where I work, I am the truant officer, I sponsor the "gaming" club. I have sponsored the club for nearly 20 years and have seen the membership change so much, it was very male dominated until about five years ago and as of this year for the very first time I have five female players.
I met last week with the three officers last week and we discussed business stuff but this week was the first week we gamed and I sprung Hollow World Expedition on them! I started them in the adventure from this years Free RPG Day, but I asked them to tell me about their characters and why they were traveling to Dallas from Chicago...and to tell me about their characters. I was making notes the entire time as they had not seen a rulebook yet nor did they know what they were playing. What I got was a total shock to me...and fun as well.
"Desi" She is heading to Dallas to record an album, what a lot of people don't know is she sang for many of the mob figures during prohibition and learned away around both kinds of piano's. :)
"Nikki" Is a RN and is heading to Dallas for the wedding of her Aunt, who because of the number of children is actually closer in age and is more like a cousin. Nikki is also a practicing Wicca and is thrilled to be seeing her Aunt again, the woman who introduced her to the Triple Goddess.
Professor Bridgett Palmer is a professor of Archaeology from the University of Michigan but is on her way to meet her boyfriend who is stationed at Fort Bliss and is meeting her in Dallas. She hopes that he will be popping the question there.
Sara Rose is a woman who runs a flower shop in Chicago and is traveling to Dallas to meet with a few other botanists. In reality Sara is a triad trained killer who is leaving Chicago to meet with a new client in Dallas. Sara was born in San Francisco and learned her trade from her mother who had learned it...well you get it. Most clients don't realize they are dealing with a woman as she maintains the utmost secrecy.
Luke Stoufer was born in Texas and his parents moved to Chicago when he was in his early teens. He still spent many summers on the ranch with his grandmother and grandfather and he is going to see them. In Chicago he is now a private detective and uses a combination of down home smarts with street smarts to get his man.
The session then jumped off as it should with the plane flying through the "tear" and Sara actually managing to pilot the plane down onto the island with little difficulty. Gail and Frank were saved as were the businessman but the co-pilot is still out and the pilot is quite dead. They all have seen the astrolabe as it bounced around the cabin but that is as far as that has gone. We ended with the landing of the plane and Sara seeing that other planes have tried the same thing and looks like they failed.
I announced the name of the session was Trapped in the Aircraft Graveyard and they were thrilled!
They grabbed the dice concept quickly but we didn't worry about averages yet as they didn't have characters...I will have to do that before the next session. IT was a blast and I am glad to have finally started....

Sorry about using the same art twice in a row but I really like it! I now have this and I am very impressed with what was written, then again "Wiggy" does a pretty good job at whatever he writes! I can look at this and see how I can twist this to what I want, which is essentially a conversion of Tim's Ghosts of Albion! The magic system needs work but I think I can sit down with someone and we can hammer something out, right Tim!
The main book won't be out for a bit, but again the second adventure in this is quite long and gives some great ideas...I can see getting a lot out of this. Time to dust of my League of Extraordinary Gentleman DvD and give it a look see!
Wednesday, August 24, 2011
I have been waiting a long time for Ghosts of Albion to hit stores, I know I am not alone in this but it has been maddening! Well I found out that there is going to be a Victorian Era release for another system that I am also very excited about and while it will not be Ghosts I think that I can really get behind this game. First Triple Ace Games is just releasing two quick start type adventures with some cut down Ubiquity rules for it as well as 6 pre generated characters. I will post more when I find out more...but I do have the cover image, posted above....

It has indeed been a long time since I posted anything here...the summer break is almost over and I am happy to say that I spent a ton of time with my sons! That meant not much posting here or even thinking about posting here. ;)
Our kitchen got redone and it looks great but that took a lot of time and displacement of a lot of our belongings. I ended up with a meniscus tear in my left knee and a sever sprain of my MCL as well! That was fun...
Austin had his birthday, I was able to get to GenCon for a day and then a buddy wanted help teaching his nephew how to play DnD...well Pathfinder. I took the kids to Wizard World for the day on a Friday and we were treated so well by the artists and others we had a great time. The guys in costume had no problems posing for pics with the kids, that was cool. We took several trips out, the family went to the zoo, I didn't see above. We did go to the Ren Faire and I ended up with one of my sons walking sticks to get through the day. OUCH! We went swimming a variety of parks this summer and we were able to hang out at two of our neighbors pools quite a bit as well...that was fun. Summer was fun and next year I will take every Friday off again...I had way too much fun with my sons not to do it again. We went to see the Xmen movie as well as Captain America...they both were very very good. I saw Thor and it was...ok but not bad, just eh.
Now for the high school kids...I stumbled upon Hollow Earth Expedition at GenCon and got to be in a demo with the lead writer for it. My two friends and I had a blast and I really had forgotten how much I enjoyed the material...it helps me with two things. I love historical period gaming pieces but Call of Cthulhu might be just to much for the kids. I have been a sucker for the old type serial shows like Flash and Buck Rogers as well as Doc Savage etc... My Basic DnD idea is on hold but I know I could pick that up in a heartbeat on just what I have already and when we get back to school and our first meeting on the 30th we will be playing HEX. Gotta love a land filled with dinosaurs, magic items (Atlantean of course and don't get me started on my infatuation with Atlantis), and of course goose stepping bad guys!
For now I have some more to prep but already I am ready to get started as soon as we get back...this should be fun!
Tuesday, July 5, 2011
My Basic DnD game is taking real shape now, we have the Villages of Oakford, Millford and Rosehill. The town of Rivers Edge, the Bleak Tower (used to be Black Tower), Dur Dollem the dwarvish home, and Mythshanal the Elvish home all in the area! I am thrilled with how things are developing and I cannot wait to spring this on the kids in the fall!!! I need to come up with a name and right now I am not coming up with anything but I will!
Friday, July 1, 2011
Summer has really started finally! The first of July and the heat is picking up here in Chicago, we are under a heat advisory for the day and I will be home with all three boys...sounds like a great day for gaming!!
We left our three characters and a hired mage invading a goblin cave, we shall see what happens today I think.
I worked on my map of the area and put together a map. The characters are based out of the Village of Rose Hill right now and south east of them is the Bleak Tower. I have added quite a bit from different Basic modules in the area and really look forward to the boys exploring AND the kids from AGC will get a crack at this as well.
Off now to go back to bed....
Sunday, June 26, 2011
For my birthday today the boys gave me a few hours of old school gaming! I took one of the caves of chaos "goblins", and set it by itself. The kids played a Human Ranger, Dwarvish Cleric and an Elf Fighter Thief with an npc Mage. They laughed as the Ogre tried to ambush them on their second journey in...the Ogre escaped so we will see him again! No great treasure yet but we are having a blast so far!
Tuesday, June 21, 2011
On this fine summer morning I am hope with all three boys and I am going through my gaming boxes in the garage...there are going to be some happy people at Half-Priced Books today!
I am working on a Basic/LL/SnW campaign for the fall for the AGC kids...but that is going on in my head as I clean...and clean and clean!
Friday, June 17, 2011
I am very stoked!
Ok now why? Well after this next session for my Pathfinder group I will be getting a chance to sit on the other side of a GM screen and actually PLAY! One of my players is taking up the mantle of GM for about three to four months and I am very excited about this because YES it will be Dragonlance. Now I am not a huge fan of DL but I have been doing some reading and I have to say the timeline he has chosen is exciting to me, it will be set in the Age of Mortals.
The GM has also put all of the characters together, we will get a chance to read the backgrounds of the character and go from there...
I won't bore you with how long it has been since I sat on the front side of a GM screen for a campaign of any sort...but let's just say that some of the top songs included artists known as the Bangles, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna was just hitting her own!
To quote a favorite movie of mine from the seventies, "This is gonna be GREAT!"
Tuesday, June 14, 2011
The party of big Kids from the Northlands Gaming Group have picked back up and are in the middle of the AP from Paizo, Bastards of Erebus. They are in the final leg of the adventure assaulting the lair of the Bastards, and so far things are actually going well. We had to pause to halt the session and will pick up in July...this is going to be very interesting for me as now the real fun begins....
The pic above was my first introduction to Tieflings from 2e and I must say that the pic is one I like better than what passes for Tieflings now...just thought I should share!
Tuesday, June 7, 2011
I really want to do something with Doctor Who now after watching the latest episodes....especially seeing Madame Vastra and Jenny, really want to see more of those characters!
Demons run, but count the cost
The battle's won, but the child is lost
Demons run when a good man goes to war
Night will fall and drown the sun
When a good man goes to war
Friendship dies and true love lies
Night will fall and the dark will rise
When a good man goes to war
Demons run, but count the cost
The battle's won, but the child is lost
Great episode and now I really want to see more...I still hate Moffat but I am beginning to appreciate him..,.

Welcome to June, I wanted to get something down earlier but it was a busy day at work today...anyhoo. Summer is here and now I am in my DnD mood, I am still running my Cthonian Stars game and that is great, my mind keep wandering to gold and monsters now. :)
I love Pathfinder but I have a chance to do something else as a one shot this summer and I think I am going to go with a B/X LL and CnC combo! I have the idea down, I need to put some characters together for a nice little exploration/dungeon crawl!
I will post more later about this special Northlands exclusive! :)
Sunday, May 29, 2011
Well May is going out with a lot of thunder and lightning...On the gaming front though it has been quiet, the kids group at school is done for the year AND the kids group has been on hiatus since football started and now has ended.
Online we started our Cthonian Stars game and that is moving as most pbp games move...slowly. The Northlands gaming group meets on June 12th and this is going to be a very interesting session.
We will be wrapping up a plot point, one that Tim knows well...we will be advancing the story farther as well. The heroes of Westcrown will need to face a very determined adversary before moving forward though. This battle could be very very deadly for our party and mistakes on their part could cost them...I am ready for the moans of the npc's are being played smarter than they should be...well not this time, this group is smart and very very deadly! Good luck boyo's!
Speaking of the Adventure Games Club at the high school, I think I just need to throw caution to the wind and have them play in a good old dungeon crawl...I just have to decide which system to use...
Saturday, May 21, 2011
The adults will be gaming on the 12th of June and this is where they are at, Cheliax. I am using a Pathfinder adventure modified and it's working quite well...we are going to be blessed with another soul at the table and that will be fun! The continued pursuit of finding one of the lost brothers will take center stage and we shall go from there.
Tuesday, May 10, 2011
I'm not sure what to do with the kids at school, they have kind of fallen apart recently and to make matters worse a lot of them have gotten sick and have missed club to boot. The consistency is not there and of course we have spring weather and teen agers to contend with...
Today is going to be a punt day unless they all show and bring their thinking caps....
Monday, May 9, 2011
Tales of the Pendragon is taking off on two sites as a matter of fact...I am very happy with this and cannot wait to spin the tale. A little teaser though is that Jennifer Grace the daughter of the Ambassador to Saturn has disappeared and the Wardens are being asked to look into it.
Now we start to have a good time!
Friday, May 6, 2011
I am working on a nice little campaign idea called Tales of the Pendragon. This would follow the exploits of the crew of the Pendragon as she operates in our system dealing with the little secrets of darkness that appear. I found this image and I am going to use it as the crux of the first story...I'l let your imagination run rampant.
This of course is for Chthonian Stars from Wildfire using the Traveller rules set.

Tuesday, May 3, 2011
Have I mentioned that I am very excited about playing Traveller! I want to bring some of my favorite characters from other games and Travellerize them! Watch out Tim, I have a soft spot for a certain Bookworm turned explorer...
I already have a plot hook for her...and now I have to decide about the other characters...but I know that Blair will be playing a Darrian!
Sunday, May 1, 2011
I am getting ready to play in an online Traveller game and I am really excited about this! I've been a fan of Traveller for years but just could never find the right face to face group to play it...but I have found a PbP group that is willing to try it and I get to PLAY not RUN the adventure, YEA!
Found this image on the web and thought it was a great image and though I am not playing a Vargr...I will have to soon looking at that pic!
I will have to work on a one-off that uses Traveller for my home group and see when we can next get together....
Saturday, April 30, 2011
Austin my youngest made his first Communion today and the day was wonderful and the family and friends that were there made this a very nice day for him. This also brings April to a close and May begins tomorrow and it will be fun to see what that month brings!
Saturday, April 23, 2011
I have got that Star Trek itch again, usually strikes two to three times a year...well it's here again! I am not a huge fan of Decipher's Star Trek and Icon is good, but trying to teach the group another system could be equated to putting a gun to my head so this might be a nice compromise!
In this version which is based upon Franz Joseph's works, Star Fleet is very different. The nice thing is that with a little work you could play in the TOS timeline with just a few tweaks if you wanted. The game mechanics are based upon d20 Modern so teaching a new set of rules would not be an issue, and generally the characters start at 5th level...unless they are fresh cadets!
I am going to be driving a lot today and waiting in the van...I think I will be doing some reading and writing...
Was at the hobby store last night with one of my players and we talked about how much fun this game would be...until we realized that out of the six of us we were the two with the most background on the game! If you have not looked at this game it is a dark game with failure being not the worst thing you have to fear! Your small group of acolytes work for an Inquisitor, he sends you out to sniff out and sometimes put an end to any heresy that can be found. Heresy as defined by what the living Emperor thinks it is...I know it sounds complicated. Maybe a nice game of Call of Cthulhu! :)
Wednesday, April 20, 2011
The AGC took me for a loop this week, they actually requested NOT to play Dragon Age but to play Castles and Crusades...what could I say...but yes!
Using resources I already had I came up with a nice little mystery dungeon crawl, involving an abandoned outpost at the edge of the Black March. The group, Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, Rogue and Bard began at the broken gate to the outpost. Finally going inside they took a look around the covered courtyard and the many doors and decided that climbing the ladders to the roof would be best. Two broken ladders later they were on the roof of the outpost and discovered a trap door. Opening the door they discovered a wolf at the bottom of the ladder leading down off the roof into what was once a stables. Getting a closer look they realized that there were two wolves and they looked cared for....at this point the wizard chooses to descend...that was the last mistake the wizard made, the wolves tore her apart.
The party then decided to snipe the wolves and in the process managed to snap one bow string AND the bard dropped his bow down, where one of the wolves grabbed it and made kindling out of it!! They both rolled ones and then rolled again to confirm the fumbles....OUCH!
Finally the wolves were dispatched and that ended our session for the day....though they did descend into the stables and found the skeletal remains of a few others and a pouch with 20 silver.
Next week we will continue with a new character for the wizard....
Sunday, April 17, 2011
The end of the third quarter brought the end of the hero portion of this years club...now we start the fourth quarter with Dragon Age. I thought we were going to do Call of Cthulhu but the kids just couldn't get a concept together for characters.
So we now explore the dark times of the Dragon Age...the system itself is very simple and we will be starting our first session with some combat...should be pretty simple and then we will get into the story. I am modifying the little adventure that came with the rules, it's fine BUT I think it needs some help, I think that some of the encounters need attention and it feels very much like a railroad adventure. I understand why and don't fault the writer or Green Ronin, but I can do something more with it.
I will post more later...
Sunday, April 10, 2011
Now that is no where near my house BUT it does reflect my mood, Spring is in the air!! Work has picked up, so my free time has waned, I've had to scuttle one pbp game and I need to pay some serious attention to another before it is in full code!
Lot's of work to do around the house and for once this Spring I really don't mind...I know that I've got some good table top time coming. The kids are continuing on with their adventures chasing the Chalice of Freya...though it's not where the modules says, I just took the idea!
The adults were at a decision point and now they are on a different Adventure Path! The fun is just beginning and a rescue has to happen here soon!
I need to remember to post more here...I've been looking at the Gumshoe system, and the Dragon Age system as of late. This is what I do to keep from being bored! Gumshoe has some really nice qualities to it, and Dragon Age is looking like it could be fun as well...I broke down and bought the game for the 360, I will need to see. There is some really good free source material out there, my favorite is the adaption of Mystara to the AGE system!! FUN!!!!
Ok now the boys are in football for a spring league and of course I'm coaching...this is just a two hand touch league but....it's still football!
See ya'll later!
Friday, April 1, 2011
I know that it is April 1st and there is the cosmic conspiracy to have some fun at another's expense BUT I'm just not in the mood. I've been going through a dark phase of late and actually have picked up my Call of Cthulhu books again...that is never a good sign.
I picked up Trail of Cthulhu just to see what that system was like, it's very interesting...I would like to try something with it OR with it's much older brother CoC 6th ed.
Right now my head is pounding but realized I had not posted in some time and wanted to get at least one post on the first of the month.
I don't think I would be able to get the kids involved in a CoC game so I might have to do something with the high school kids, or if the opportunity arises with the adults...though I feel that is a long shot.
Tim's librarian with some tweaks would be a great character here....alright time for some migraine medicine...ciao for now.
Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Today we finally finish up the beginning of the storyline for the AGC kids...after a week of ill health we should have our first super on super battle. Today the kids will be meeting Dragonfly, Howler and Anubis!
This is going to be fun....is Viper really pulling the strings and what does Emerson Electronics have to do with all this?!
Tuesday, March 15, 2011
I have been sick since Monday morning and I've had time to reminisce about this game from so long ago.
I remember playing this game at Kurt L's house, he is now a Lutheran Minister, and we would play for hours, heck over winter break I remember playing for days! My best friend was Todd and he played The Bowman, yes a Green Arrow/Hawkeye rip off. I was playing Sparrow a shape changing American Indian. We battled many villains and eventually Kurt was running and then I was running games, we kept track of the number of issues we had and of course other heroes made their debut. We had crossovers and limited series issues...we had a great time for about two years and then Kurt graduated a year ahead of us and the Champions game kind of slowed to a halt. I continued it a bit in college but by then DC Heroes had come out and I was interested in that and left Champions behind.
Years later the Best Man from my wedding took up the mantle and began running Champions again, this saw once again someone else running story lines and I ran some story lines but the other players just didn't seem to enjoy it as much! I've used those characters from both era's here and there and now with a renewed vigor I intend to run some games for my kids and for the kids in the AGC and maybe just maybe I can convince are adult group to give it a try...
Wednesday, March 9, 2011
Well yesterday we started our 2nd issue of the comic/story. We used Champions 6E this time...IT has been a bit since I ran Champions and you know what...I had a blast!! The kids did well and enjoyed the game, they are finally getting the clues as to who is behind the bad stuff that is happening...of course it is tied to the company that one of them works for in their secret ID.
After I stopped we took 15 minutes and went over what has happened in the last few weeks with the different systems and I asked which one they enjoyed more. There was some talk and to a person they agreed that Champions 6E is the game they liked best!!! I was shocked figuring that it would be MnM3E, but they said they didn't like the combat system in MnM3e and that the game system felt to vanilla or plain to them.
I am overjoyed, honestly. This is the third time I have tried Champions in the club over the last 16 years or so and this group handled it the best. So for now, Impact, Tempest, Waraxe, Victrix, Psion and Shockwave are working to keep Victoria City safe!
Now this week I will be looking at putting Nathan and Connor's characters together and trying this with them!!!
Tuesday, March 8, 2011
Well for those that don't know me, I started playing Champions in 1982 and it was really the third system I learned. First of course being the grand daddy and second being Runequest. Top Secret was next I do believe but I digress.
With the AGC group I have been doing a supers theme and really it has been going quite well, the kids love their characters and are really getting into it BUT what we are having a hard time with is the system of choice. We started with VnV and that went pretty well though they felt that combat could have gone smoother...and that character generation seemed way off for their more modern likes! Next we transformed their characters into MnM3e and that again was good the characters held up and worked quite well...things they didn't like was combat and there was something that they agreed was missing something spicy...now I'm not sure exactly what was missing but today I bring out their characters converted to Champions 6E!
This should be interesting just because the core mechanic of this game has not changed and heck I can ignore what I want like any good GM! We'll see how things play out today and I'll let you all know how it goes!
Sunday, March 6, 2011
The kids yesterday continued in their quest to retrieve the Chalice of Freya from the Black Wolf clan of Orcs. In the last session they defeated the entry guards and moved in using stealth and an awesome tracking roll by the Dwarf Garran they later surprised three orcs playing cards, and in typical orc fashion one of them killed another (a fumble roll). Now continuing on the group was attacked by a well trained Giant Weasel! They managed to kill it and it's handler BUT the Elf Tammathiel was seriously wounded...Garran was able to heal him BUT at the cost of a lot of his healing energy. Finding a secret door they were working on opening it when a Bugbear attacked them wounding Kayle, but Tammathiel made short work of the Bugbear.
Finally a boss room! The group attacked a room with four orc lieutenants a sub-chief and a shaman...the fight was blood and long, the party won in the end but the party was left with only Kayle and Ronnoc standing. The shaman had escaped! The chalice was not present...now we next meet in two weeks.
Friday, March 4, 2011
Ah...the other pairing, now this is Topaz to your left and of course Rhas al Ghul to your right.
We are still working our way through this one but we know this, Onyx is immortal with out the Lazarus Pit. Onyx is their son and his father has not done much to be a part of his life...and that is just fine with his mother of course and his two aunts.
Onyx is well traveled, he has lived in some very distant places and is slow to anger but wields great magical power. Having spent time with Dr. Fates and Strange he is known in the magical circles.
More later as we really haven't developed this one as much as the other...
My son Connor has decided that it would be cool if these two would be the parents of his hero character.
You see I told them about a game I played in, in college where you had to have at least one super powered parent. Well we had a blast and since Justice by Tim B is a product of this idea so now is Nightstrike!
Kane Natchios is trained in many different kinds of martial arts thanks to his mother and father...though they were never married he spent time with both of them. We are still working on how they met BUT that should be fun. Nightstrike has recently moved to Victoria City after spending some time in Japan, he is looking up an old childhood friend...more on Nathan's character later. Kane is not actively sought by the Hand, yet but that might change as he makes a name for himself if he chooses to be a hero, (duh!) in his new home.
Kane is operating as a Security Consultant/Bodyguard...this has set up written all over it! Looking forward to doing something with this real soon.
Wednesday, March 2, 2011
Last week we started a new game with the AGC kids, a game set in Victoria City which replaced Seattle in my world. I only had four kids there instead of six and one of them had not created a character yet, the first session went really well, this week we finished up Issue #1 and it could have gone smoother BUT it did go well. We had the debut of Tempest, Psion and Victrix. Tempest is a weather controller, Psion is a Psylocke clone and Victrix is a beautiful BRICK. Psion really showed well in the typical bank robbery, Tempest stayed in the background and never assumed her identity and Victrix came in at the end and really missed most of the action.
Now I used VnV last time, this time I used MnM 3e and things moved pretty well...next week I am going to use a different game and then decide which should be our game system of choice. All in all the story is going along well and the kids are having a blast with their characters! I am enjoying building Victoria City...it has been fun so far!
Monday, February 28, 2011
Yesterday we needed to run some errands and the boys and I were going to be in the car while mother actually ran into the various second hand shops and estate sales that we were checking out, so I decided to talk to the boys about their heroes...well the ones they were going to make! Bringing some notebook paper and the DC Adventures book we got cracking on these new heroes!
First we have Connor, he is a robot/android that is looking for his creator (yea sort of like Data from Trek but Connor has not seen that story arc, and he came up with it himself) and fighting crime along the way. He has a strong investigative background and his computer like brain remembers just about everything...except who is creator is and what he was supposed to be doing!
Second Nathan, is an immortal mystic spellcaster who comes from a long family line of spellcasters. He has set himself up in Victoria City as an occult investigator and has met Connor's character and befriended him. Nathan's character knows all about his family and would rather NOT remember who they are...they are not the nicest set of spellcasters in the world. He can trace his family's history back to Atlantis and that may or may not be a cool thing!
Thirdly we have Austin who is a gadgateer and was responsible for repairing and updating a lot of Connor's hardware and software when he was originally found. He has the headquarters that the group uses, it is located underground along the docks in Victoria City and is very very large.
Now we have to come up with names for everybody AND Nathan was speaking about changing his character to something else BUT we shall see...overall it was a good couple of hours and the boys enjoyed talking about it instead of just plugging in and watching a movie!

Today was one of those days that just was wrong on so many levels...I did not sleep well, woke up with a headache and generally just wanted to crawl into a hole and sleep and couldn't. The new dog...Ace needed attention as did the kids and wife and...oh yea today was a gaming day.
I have the story arcs prepped for some time now and that was fine, I just didn't have the fun hat tied on. However the kids were excited and the new format of three hours worked great. We had our new player today and instead of trying to go slowly with him I got him involved in the actions right away...though I think he has forgotten a very important item. ((Hint hint Tim if your reading he needs to take notes during the game.))
The battle against the orcs went as expected, they almost stopped them from getting the chalice out of the temple but alas the orc leader got away and now they are in pursuit!! At the end it was fun and they are in one of the orc caves trying to find the chalice...one of their number has been "quested" to do this, it was fun. We even had a good old fashioned debate on party treasure split. :)
Next week...I need to set the time, I think 1pm till 4pm will work but I need to get the word out!

Alright well we managed to play just a bit of VnV yesterday and I held my breath...the kids in the AGC were not keen on the changes I made to their characters BUT after I explained why they were willing to give it a peek. We had three full characters ready to go:
Impact: A very quick agile martial artist type who likes to mix it up. Akina is the secret ID and she is working her internship at the Victoria City Times as she finishes up college.
Shockwave: The resident blaster/flyer of the group who has sonic abilities, not a scream, just the ability to throw a nice sonic beam. Desire` is her secret ID and she is a Graphic Design Artist working for Emmerson Electronics and by night a DJ.
Waraxe: Our brick of the group who didn't change into his hero ID the whole time he just did normal stuff! Tyson comes from Empire City (New York in our world) and his father died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he was a firefighter. Mom managed well enough and she was able to get him a bit of a scholarship out west in Victoria City. He came out and the airlines destroyed his 'axe, his guitar the one his dad gave him. Bummed he managed to find a beat up six string in a second hand store ;) and this one was magical. He can change into his hero form a Nordic warrior named Waraxe.
The fight was in a park where one of Victoria City's (Seattle in our world) beloved citizens was hosting a talent show, some bad guys (really nothing more than stepped up mooks) tried to kidnap her. The good guys beat them off, but Impact took off as the press arrived leaving Shoackwave and Tyson to get the glory, the final scene of the "comic" was Impact throwing her chopsticks through her sensei's tv!
We continue next week with the addition of three more heroes....and yea the kids had a blast and have been talking about it all morning when they see me.

Soooo....the kids in the AGC really hit the skids with the Doctor Who game I was very disappointed. I have been on a Supers kick of late and I like MnM 3e, I do and I am waiting for the Gm Screen to hit the pdf store but until then....
Yep you see it right VnV, this game has had a special place in my heart for years, we never really played it that much BUT we tried and as high school kids we fell in love with Champions. I will never forget though sitting in my buddies basement while he painted mini's and I ran through the rules and then we took those same newly super mini's and tried out the combat rules. We had a rough go of it but we did have fun!
Well now I am beginning to see the diamond in the rough here and I have to say that I'm really intrigued. The kids have spent two weeks making their characters and we begin today...I'll let you all know how it turned out!
Watch out Victoria City there are some new heroes coming!

The Young Blades for the most part made level, well at least the three that have logged the most time playing have. Garran "Two Axe" Stonecutter, Ronnoc and his companion Tammathel are now second level!
Now this is a big deal because making level in my games tends to be difficult, at best. The challenges that they faced were many from a green slime fungus to a host of orcs to finally a Dark Priest whose patron was Orcus!!
Next Friday will be our next session and they had to flee from the Orcs who the Dark Priest led...the Blades had to get back to their village. The Orcs are in hot pursuit and we will have a very large battle next week in and around the village. Should be fun but I know we won't be finishing this until our first Saturday session on the 26th!
Up Next on the 19th will be the first meeting of the Northlands Gaming Group (the older group). Their character have been told to go to a small town and be their father's representative at the dedication of a church. This church is special because it is where he got his start many many years ago now. That's just the beginning... :)
