Doctor Who RPG

I had the opportunity to do some gaming with the kids at the school and we started a Doctor Who game using the Cubicle 7 rules.

IT was a blast, I won't go into a lot of details but the group of 21 year olds having been invited to Las Vegas by the uncle of one of the players become involved in some very interesting incidents.

Two of the group are kidnapped and a third finds a 13th floor that doesn't exist...that is when the Dr. Who theme music started, up till then they had no idea of what the game was they were playing!

Now I asked them if they wanted to continue this or the 4th edition game, they chose the Dr. Who game...I am really stoked.

DnD Essentials Parts 2 and 3

The boys today were joined by their uncle and the same friend, this time they had a Slayer, Warpriest, Rogue and a Mage so all four of the basics were covered. The Slayer got stuck out of combat for a bit but was able to join in before all the bad guys fled...or were dead.

The kids (age 10 all) are doing really well it's fun to watch them start remembering the rules and their characters, I really love doing this with them it's a blast!

Next time we wrap up Chapter one!!

Encounters: Keep on the Borderlands

Well, had a blast last Friday with the boys and one of their friends as we did Chapter1-1 of the Borderlands Encounters.

We have a rogue, a cleric and a fighter and I didn't change a thing in the encounter...the fighter went down and the cleric was close but it is damn hard to knock down a Dwarvish Cleric! The rogue did rogue stuff and had fun.

The boys faces as they got the last of the bad guys was great, they wanted treasure but that has to wait until later this week... :)

All in all it was fun!

Been a bit...

Ok...where to start...

Football is done and I have hung up the whistle at the high school. I am going to help coach my sons in the fall but that is a whole different story. This new found free time allows me to get back to my first true love....Gaming!!

I have picked up the DnD essentials line and have started teaching my kids AND some of their friends, and it has been a blast. I wish that damn Nentir Vale book would be out sooner...but I think I have enough tricks up my sleeve to keep them busy.

I am working on something else I have to say I'm pretty stoked up about it but more on that later...need to get some ibuprofen in me...this cold has done a number on my knees.

Dog Daze

July has gone by and not much was posted...been busy with some other things...but now August is here!

GenCon is this week and I am so looking forward to this vacation, after this I begin coaching football so I am done until October 24th, unless we make the playoffs.

I have been looking at Savage Worlds...I had bought their Cthulhu book over the holidays but never did anything with it. I see that they have some interesting books coming out at GenCon and one of those being Space 1889 by Frank Chadwick...this book is one that I am picking up at the con for sure.

I want to see what other stuff is going to be going on but really I am looking forward to seeing some old friends and doing a lot of gaming.

See you later this month...

Stargate Command/Stargate RPG

Last night stumbled upon some old notes for my Stargate Command RPG campaign that I ran for a bit and it took me back seven years!

2003 and Alderac Entertainment released the Stargate Command RPG at GenCon that year and I was not able to go due to the birth of my third son, but two really great friends went and bought the game for me. Not only did they buy it but they drop shipped it to me so that by Saturday I had the game in my hands!!

Now I am a die hard SGC fan and it even displaced my love for Star Trek, heck my wife started watching that show and later on my older sons as well! Over time after seeing every episode at least twice and owning most of the seasons the fondness went away and I moved on.

2010 Stargate Atlantis came and went after SG-1 was canceled and now we have Stargate Universe...and I have watched a bit and just couldn't get into it. I know it's a dark show and the casting is actually pretty good but it just didn't do it for me.

Well I think that I am going to dust off the game and see about converting it to my favorite Sci-fi game, Traveller. Traveller has become my go to scifi game and I can see having some fun with this one as well. Just have to see if I can get A, B, C, S and T to give me a one shot with this one...and yes those are the initials of my players, no D as of yet. :)

After Surgery

Ok for the next few days I am going to be restricted in movement, I had arthroscopic knee surgery. I am looking at things that I have downloaded and not really looked at. One of the first things that I started looking at was Swords and Wizardry...I have to say that I like the simplicity of the rules, I might have to actually pay for a print copy here down the road.

I also liked some of the addons that I have found out there, Kilgore has some great house rules and I could see myself using these with my high school kids group. I sponsor the club in the high school I work at, usually between 4-6 players are what I have and one of the great rules that Kilgore uses is a roll to see if you level! Great idea for a group that has limited time!!

Before I nod off here I wanted to say that I saw the post about DnD essentials and I once again know that I am glad that I am teaching my own kids Pathfinder. DnD 4 has pretty much run its course with me...I will pick up something that looks interesting but right now I am not impressed with the marketing strategy nor the direction the game is going.

Lone Wolf Multiplayer

I picked this up...because...I wanted to. First of all this reminds me so much of the old school rules that have made a comeback in the last three years. The rules are simple and easy to learn, the rulebook gives you only one character "class" that you can be a Kai Lord but that's ok there are a few more out there on Mongoose's Web site. I am looking forward to seeing what the next rulebook brings, it is supposed to be more character types.

I could see this be as a nice simple game that can be played when one player doesn't show or when you are going on vacation and don't want to haul a bunch of books or even your laptop. I have seen some "home" rules on the web site that can be easily used to expand some options for combat, and some that I think make it more complicated.

All in all a good buy for me and right now I like easy compared to more complicated.

Science Fiction Gaming

I am a HUGE scifi fan and when it comes to scifi gaming I have determined that the system I wish to use is Traveller, by Mongoose. I have all of the old classic stuff and I have a lot of the MegaTraveller products as well.

Traveller the way I would play it though would be more Space Opera than hard core science...so let me throw this out there for you guys to chew on, what system would you use?

Some Modern Horror

Why is it about this time every year I get the itch to do some modern horror...well don't fight it!

I usually pick up my Eden books, and start plotting. Being friends with Tim B. the writer of Ghosts of Albion has it's advantages as we were one of the test groups for him so we have access to the writer and a ton of our notes, so we can incorporate a lot of that info into our Modern Horror Games.

The big baddie here is Chicago by Night, this started off with two players and now has grown to three and we play when we can...the first two characters are siblings, twins as a matter of fact, separated at birth. They have found themselves in Chicago and the entire first season was about them getting their butts kicked by the various supernatural creatures in Chicago. Until the very end when a power play was put in motion by an upstart Vampire who wanted to be the Prince of Chicago and he used our players to accomplish that...and in turn they came into their own and the butt kicking ended, well their butts anyways. :)

They have been put into the position to be the Guardians of Chicago...and a little more that they don't know about...we have had our Summer Adventure, our Fall and our Winter the next time we play it will be our Spring and you know what happens in the spring...that's right Allergy Season! :) Well that will be a surprise anyways....

The great thing about playing with some really powerful characters is that you can throw a boat load of crap at them and not feel bad about it. They were joined in their last adventure by a Kabbalah Mystic with his own talking skull, yea I ripped it but trust me I'm ok with it. These three characters can lay some serious smack down and they have...and I have had them up against some nice little baddies...now I can start planning the next one.

Well that's it for June, see you all next month. :)

Superhero Game

I have bought the newest version of Villains and Vigilantes and it brought back some great memories of playing it as a teen. There are a few differences from the 1982 revised rules but really nothing that is game breaking, I am just happy to see it in print again and in the hands of the creators.

I also have been looking at ICONS and I have to say that I really like these rules...and I have converted quite a few Marvel and DC characters. The rules are very simple and I can see that everything that I have done with MnM/Champions/Marvel/VnV I can do with the ICON rules.

I look forward to the next edition of MnM but I'm not sure I will be picking it up right away...but we'll see.

Gamemastery guide

I got my copy today and I am not going to say it is the end all and be all of my universe but it's a good book and I like a lot of it on my first read...it is going with me away this weekend so I will have more time to cuddle with it.n :)

The last session...

The group didn't do so hot this time...I believe that the inclusion of one person in this group needs to come to an end and so it shall.

I have a group that understands party first but we have one newer player who tends to think individual first...this has almost caused the deaths of two players...really one should be dead but I was way to kind.

Overall random encounters almost killed the party....the dice were nasty...and the play of one did a lot to bring certain doom. The overall plot moved a bit forward but not by much.

Thursday, June 3, 2010

I went ahead and got this last night and I have read through some of it, I have to say I like a lot of the simplicity to the game. I have to say first that I am not a huge fan of MnM, something about it just rubs me the wrong way, though I am a very large fan of Champions!

ICONS seems to be something more akin to FASERIP and Bash, simple yet elegant that is very intuitive. The random method to making characters is really well done and I can see lots of room for growth. I'm not going to break down the system yet, I am still wrapping my head around it but I am very happy with my first read through of it.

More to come!

Retro Gaming

The AGC had their final meeting on Tuesday and the request was for a dungeon bash...I started them in a dungeon and they actually got farther than I thought but I did notice a few things....

1) The latter editions of DnD made it possible for everyone to contribute, in PF the spellcasters have 0 level spells that can help in combat.

2) The combats take just as long, if not longer as the non-fighting types tend to get left out of the action.

3) Brought back some great memories and it was good to know that the THAC0 chart once looked at could be memorized again so easily.

Game Log from Pathfinder Game

I know it's been a bit but I was gently reminded by my one follower that I had not posted anything about our last session...

Recapping the group had been hired by the Silverheel Clan to investigate the location of a shot lost to time. The group had found something and were last left with a decision on where to go and what to do...they chose to go forward into a room that left them filled with more questions than answers...a room that let them experience something from the past? They were able to go back in time to speak to some dwarves that had a settlement in the mountains...when and where was something that was left unanswered.

Finally they tried to climb downward...the Mage, didn't quite make it but the feather fall spell did...right into the water near the underground island, on where the big baddie was!! Now it was a race of time PLUS the major hitters had doffed their armor to better survive a fall....the fight ensued and the baddie beaten BUT not before the chamber they were in began to flood and the only one left standing was the ever falling ranger!!!! He saved the day and they were able to return with a report for the Silverheels.

They were sent to speak to some dwarves about an Axe and along the way found a dwarvish caravan that had been ambushed and apparently everyone dead....???

We are gaming on the 12th, should be fun!!!!

Pathfinder Campaign Chapter 1.1

The group of adventurers find themselves working for the Silverheel Clan of Gnomes. The Silverheels would like someone to locate their lost workshop, this workshop was lost over 1000 years ago.

After almost two days of searching the party found a hidden staircase in the foothills of the mountains (name to follow). The staircase had also been recently found by some orcs, the brief battle left four orcs dead.

Descending the stairs led the party to a small room and a trap, the trap caused Durga and Korbin to fall into a small cistern. Callista was chosen to descend and pull up the party, even though there was a staircase here.

The party back together dealt with the remains of a chest and were surprised by some skeletons, these skeletons were quickly dealt with. Moving on after a nights rest the party was ambushed by some very strange creatures that vaporized into a black crystal like mist once killed. Finding a strange room full of chains and pulleys and such the party found another staircase leading them deeper inside the dungeon.

The party now had found a landing that over looked a very deep drop into a chamber that was a lake with a small island. There were various landings that at one time must have been connected by bridges but now the bridges were gone. Using chain and ropes the party descended down to a level that had a room filled with death and decay and glowing mushrooms, Durga was attacked by an Assassin Vine, the party killed the vine and found a staircase as well as a set of double doors.

Going up the staircase good Johan was set upon by an owlbear and was nearly killed, the party killed the owlbear Chargo, but this time Korbin and Tsadok were felled. The party took two days waiting for them to recover. They did and Tsadok was able to heal the party. They had determined that the owlbear was living up the stairs from the cistern from earlier.

Moving back to the mushroom room Callista was able to use his magic and open up the door in here BUT also opened a secret door that held treasure from the Silverheel clan! There was a trap though and it almost killed Korbin, after this the party has decided to stop....

Till next time!

Water Park in Utica IL

There were four people there that stood out as good caring people employed by the resort, Beth, Mike, Trisch and Kristine!

The water park was fun for us to be at, the kids had a blast but the attached amusement park was not the best, my wife got dinged on one of the rides and it left her hurting for the rest of the night.

The food choices were not the best and they really should bring back the restaurant that closed last year.

Anyhoo, spring break 2010 is over and back to work....

Thanks to Tim for the banner, really nice!!

Cold had me floored for Friday night and most of Saturday...so no time to work on much of anything this past weekend. Though I did have time Saturday night to look at some of the deity information for the new world coming through, but now I want to work on some maps...always the death knell for me!!

On a side note, I managed to find my Gazetteer for the known worlds from Goodman Games this weekend, and I am pretty stoked about that!!

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

As some of you might know I sponsor the game club at the high school where I work and we have been using Pathfinder to do B2, we started in the ninth month of the year and we are slowly approaching the end of that month. We have had two party deaths but the kobolds are no more and the goblins are well....sharing time with their hobgoblin cousins.

I have really learned to enjoy Pathfinder's adaption of the 3.X rules and look forward to seeing where the adventure leads.

I am going back and forth as to what to do with that mad hermit in the adventure...oracle or witch? I'm just not sure yet which one...maybe an old crazy druid?

Ok so the wicked snow storm that was supposed to hit really did nothing...yea it made it a little slick but we are mid-westerners this was nothing.

I call this snow Cardiac Snow, it is wet and heavy snow that tends to flood ER's with patients. I did my neighborly duty and took care of my neighbors to either side this morning and feel pretty good!!

Time for something new...

Having never done a blog before I thought I would try my hand at it! Today was fun, we went to church this morning and then ran some errands, stumbled upon an estate sale. The sale was actually a small one but some nice hidden treasures. We then went to the goodwill store and Gina found some more hidden gems and the kids and I ate!!

Stopped by Tim and Nat's and helped put together their new torture devices...:) Home to dinner for the kids, tonight more work on next week's Kid's Mini-Con!!
